Abstract

Tradicionalmente se ha tenido una visión simplista y un tanto negativa del tejido adiposo ya que se consideraba que era un órgano pasivo cuya única función era la de almacenar el exceso de nutrientes en forma de grasas. Sin embargo, la creciente epidemia de obesidad a la que se enfrenta la actual sociedad, debida en gran medida a la combinación de la dieta moderna y al aumento del sedentarismo, ha provocado que el tejido adiposo adquiera una mayor relevancia, lo cual ha motivado el desarrollo de multitud de estudios que han proporcionado un gran avance en su conocimiento. Esto ha permitido que actualmente sepamos que el tejido adiposo además de actuar como el principal almacén energético del organismo también tiene importantes funciones autocrinas, paracrinas y endocrinas, y participa en los procesos de inflamación y de activación del sistema inmune. Motivos por los cuales, el tejido adiposo juega un papel fundamental en la regulación de multitud de procesos metabólicos en el organismo y, en consecuencia, en la aparición y desarrollo de diversas patologías.
