Modern functionalism, which gives the pragmatic function a preeminent role in the architectural conformation, was unfolded, from the beginning, among others, in what would have to do with, on the one hand, the formal strategies of the project and, on the other, the language and 'style', related but not always coincident. After the so-called crisis of modernity in the 1960s, there is a paradox that architectures that reject modern language use modern functionalist logics such as composition by parts (e.g. Rossi, Moneo, Venturi, Gehry, Koolhaas) while others (e.g. Eisenman, Sejima-SANAA), maintain and perfect the language of modernity, but they disregard or ignore this functionalist logic. The article pays special attention to how these postmodern and contemporary authors interpret the functionalist concept of 'character' by separating the link between character and style established by modern functionalism.
