Los escribanos del Concejo de Madrid (1561-1598)

Abstract

Este artículo trata sobre los escribanos del ayuntamiento de la villa de Madrid en tiempos de Felipe II. Este oficio fue una de las piezas clave del Concejo, pues más allá de sus funciones intrínsecas, su posición central convertía al escribano en un profundo conocedor de los mecanismos de funcionamiento de la institución municipal. En este estudio se analiza cómo el disfrute de un oficio no ha de ir ligado a su ejercicio, así como las tensiones, intereses y estrategias que generaba el acrecentamiento, la patrimonialización y la transmisión de una Escribanía de Consejo, mediante la biografía representativa de Francisco Martínez. La investigación se completa con la exposición de las condiciones requeridas para ejercer este oficio, la pretensión del ayuntamiento de reunir la documentación de sus escribanos, con la consecuente creación de archivos, las retribuciones salariales de estos oficiales y, finalmente la etiqueta y el ceremonial que determinaban su jerarquía.

Este artículo se ha realizado dentro del marco de los trabajos que llevamos adelante con el proyecto de investigación "Cultura y profesión en Madrid en los siglos XVI y XVII", financiado por la Comunidad de Madrid (Nº de ref.: 06/0111/2003) y que se ejecuta en el CSIC.
