Las normas internacionales humanitarias para proteger el patrimonio cultural

Abstract

Iraq, Libia, Siria y Yemen son Estados que han padecido en las últimas décadas una alarmante destrucción de su patrimonio cultural durante los conflictos armados sufridos. Las guerras, entre otras fatalidades, generan muertes de personas, refugiados, pobreza y el desmantelamiento de los servicios básicos para la supervivencia de la población. Pero no debemos olvidar que, además, las guerras causan daños y destrucción en el patrimonio cultural de los países que las sufren. Y aunque las vidas de la población siempre estarán por encima del resto de elementos a proteger, la salvaguardia de los bienes culturales también es prioritaria. Su importancia es fundamental para conocer la historia de toda la humanidad, aprender de los rasgos comunes que este patrimonio nos facilita y evitar que las diferencias y el olvido hagan que se repitan las mismas atrocidades. Además de ser fundamental en el postconflicto y en la reconstrucción de la sociedad.
