La fuente clásica principal de la tradición medieval latina y vernácula de la vida de Alejandro Magno es la Historia de Alejandro de Quinto Curcio, principal referencia de la epopeya medieval Alexandreis de Gautier de Châtillon, que influyó grandemente a su vez en el Libro de Alexandre. Otra rama de la tradición la representa el Pseudo-Calístenes y sus traducciones latinas medievales, de Julio Valerio y del Arcipreste León de Nápoles. El estudio de algunos episodios significativos de la vida del emperador macedonio en diversas obras medievales latinas y vernáculas servirá para ponerlas en relación con esta doble tradición, la primera más histórica y la segunda novelesca.

The main classical source of the Medieval Latin and vernacular tradition of the life of Alexander the Great is the History of Alexander of Quintus Curtius, main reference of the medieval epopée Alexandreis of Gautier of Châtillon, which in turn greatly influenced in the Libro de Alexandre. Another branch of the tradition is represented by the Pseudo-Callisthenes and the Latin translations by Julius Valerius and Archpriest Leo of Naples. The study of some significant episodes in the life of the Macedonian emperor in various medieval Latin and vernacular works will serve to put them in relation to this double tradition, the first more historical and the second fictional.
