El reinado de Justiniano I, que duró buena parte del siglo VI, estuvo orientado al intento de hacer resurgir el Imperio romano. En el plano jurídico, este emperador promovió un titánico esfuerzo compilador que pretendía reivindicar y actualizar una tradición de más de 1000 años de ley y jurisprudencia. Gracias a esta tarea, el Corpus Iuris sigue siendo el principal instrumento de conocimiento del Derecho Romano.
