Abstract

The main aim is to evaluate the relationship between the discipline and the relationship between father versus son and the development of the self-concept. For that, we’ve used the following precision instruments: Child’s Report of Parental Behaviour Inventory (CRPBI, 1965) and the auto concept scale (Fitts, 1965, 1972; Garanto, 1984). The sample is formed for 349 teenagers who there are 175 girls and 174 boys between 12 and 17 years old. These were in 8º EGB (126 people), 1º BUP (136 people), 2º BUP (63 people) and 3º BUP (24 people) degrees. The sample selection was carried out through the conglomerations method where all degrees according to the age level studied, were correctly represented. Making reference to the results, the analyses of punctuations, depending on the gender of the subjects, shows that the difference is slight. There is every indication that boys perceive in a higher degree than girls of the same age, their mothers are stricter with boys than with girls, punishing and scolding them more frequently. On the other hand, teen girls think about their mothers more positively than teen boys. Permissiveness to them is higher as for rules of conduct fulfilment. Results obtained allow concluding that relation and discipline the father and the mother exercise on the teen children keep relation with its self-concept. Teenagers, who obtain higher punctuations in self-concept factors, have fathers who promote a level of moderate autonomy. However, teenagers with a poorer self-concept perceive a paternal conduct characterized by the strict control. The positive father’s evaluations, love and affection manifestations and promoting the capture of decisions and choices, contributes to the self-concept development.""
