Authors: Urquijo Angarita, Martín Johani;

Abstract

__________________________________________________________________________________________________

The objective of this thesis is to analyse the meaning, reach, limits and implications of the capabilities approach elaborated by Amartya Sen in the field of moral and political philosophy. To investigate its meaning, the author examines what the capabilities approach is and its constitutive aspects. In exploring the reach, the contribution of the approach is examined with respect to the central concepts of other proposed requisites for a free and equal society such as minimum salary, rights, basic needs, human capital quality of life and human development. In this work, the limits of the proposal are developed through dialogue with its critics (Rawls, Dworkin, Pogge, Cohen, Nussbaum). The implications are developed through discussion between the capabilities approach and Enrique Dussels ethics of liberation; as well as between the capabilities approach and the Ethics of consumerism developed by Adela Cortina, arriving at a new application of the approach: the analysis of citizenship in terms of capabilities.
