ABSTRACT: This chapter analyzes the excess mortality of older adults during the October 29, 2024 DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels) in Spain's Valencian Community, examining how age, combined with structural and institutional factors, increases vulnerability to extreme weather events. Using an intersectional framework and drawing on official data and recent scientific literature, the chapter argues that the elevated death toll was neither inevitable nor purely biological but rather a consequence of systemic gaps in alert, evacuation, and institutional protection mechanisms. The study highlights the urgent need to mainstream ageing in risk management policies, moving beyond biomedical or paternalistic approaches. It advocates for inclusive disaster governance that acknowledges functional diversity, promotes active participation of older adults, and strengthens community resilience in the face of future climate crises.
