El gueto i altres poemes

Abstract

‘The Ghetto, and Other Poems’ (1918), traduït al català per primera vegada en aquest llibre, retrata en el primer poema, “El gueto”, d’una manera íntima i vívida, el món dels immigrants jueus ubicats al Lower East Side de Nova York. És una mostra de la poesia social de Ridge on es descriu l’esforç de la comunitat immigrant per instal·lar-se en la seua nació amfitriona. Els altres poemes s’agrupen en tres apartats: “Llums de Manhattan” se centra en la caracterització de l’àmbit urbà, tant el material com l’humà; “Mà d’obra”, en la classe treballadora; “Accidentals”, en les seues experiències íntimes i espirituals. En tots els poemes sobresurt el seu vigor davant la poetització de la ciutat moderna i l’esperit de protesta contra les injustícies polítiques, racials i socials dels Estats Units d’entreguerres.
