RESUMEN: Este texto busca mostrar los problemas de orden histórico y teórico, tanto de las artes plásticas como de la literatura, implicados en la construcción de la novela de tema pictórico y erótico Elogio de la madrastra, del escritor peruano Mario Vargas Llosa. La lectura analítica de esta pieza icónico-verbal se confronta con problemas históricos, como la discusión antigua sobre las diferencias cualitativas entre poesía y pintura, la clasificación ilustrada de las artes, la discusión decimonónica sobre la obra de arte total, la pregunta moderna por los límites entre lenguajes artísticos, y con diversos problemas teóricos: la ecfrasis, la hipotiposis, la narración ficcional visual y verbal, el significado en las artes visuales y los experimentos literario-plásticos de vanguardia. Todo ello, con el fin de mostrar diferentes formas de hibridación narrativa a través de recursos propios de la novela y la pintura.

ABSTRACT: This text intends to show historical and theoretical problems implied in the composition of the pictorial and erotic novel In praise of the stepmother, by the Peruvian Mario Vargas Llosa. The analytic reading of this verbal and visual work is faced up to historical topics like the ancient discussion on the qualitative differences between poetry and painting, the Enlightenment´s arts classification, the nineteenth century discussion about the total work of art, the question to the artistic languages limits, and theoretical ones: ekphrasis, hypotiposis, visual and verbal narration, the meaning in visual arts, and the visual-literary avant-garde experiments. Everything tries to explain the different ways of narrative hybridization through resources arising from novel and painting.
