Abstract

ABSTRACT: This research project within the information behavior field as a branch of information science was undertaken under the socio-cognitive paradigm. By using Kuhlthau’s Information Seeking Process (1993a, 2004) it was possible to understand the 2016-2017 eleventh grade students’ search behavior - their thoughts, feelings and actions as they sought information for their graduation project. For the study, conducted under a mixed method, a questionnaire was used to gather quantitative data and a focus group for qualitative data. Based on the data, it was possible to inquire the students’ behaviors regarding how they searched, selected, assessed and analyzed their search results, according to their information needs that had been previously stated as their research questions. Based on these, the stages and elements involved in Kuhlthau’s model are validated. It can be concluded that the study of high school students’ information behavior enables the design of informational skills and informational literacy programs, which are appropriate to students’ information needs from the early school years.
