Abstract

Objective: to carry out a narrative review of the published literature since 2000 in order to know if it is possible to feed children properly with a vegan diet since their birth. Method: a two stages bibliographic search was conducted. The first one was in Google Academic Search, using the information obtained for the introduction. The second one in the Health Science Database PubMed, Cinhal and Scopus where 26 publications were chosen. Results: the principal nutrient deficiencies that can be developed in vegan children were identified. Afterwards the growth curve of both vegan and omnivore children has been compared. It has been established the nurses’ vegan nutritional requirements knowledge from birth. Finally, the benefits of following a vegan diet have been pointed out. Discussion and conclusions: well-planned vegan diets permit an adequate development of children from birth. Also, vitamin B12 is the only nutrient of compulsory supplementation. The health staff performs an important role since they have to give the guidelines to introduce the complementary feeding, as well as to guide the parents in order to avoid the nutritional deficiencies that can give rise to serious consequences.
