Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe the pragmatic behaviour and social distribution of the discourse markers introducing direct quotation in two oral speech samples. Specifically, we propose to carry out a comparative analysis between interviews of Sevillian speakers (PRESEEA-Seville corpus) and Peruvian speakers living in the city of Seville (PERUSEV corpus). The two corpora have been collected following similar sociolinguistic criteria, that is −sex, age and educational level−. The main findings show that the discourse markers linked to the function of direct quotation are largely predominant in the corpus of Peruvian speakers. In terms of social factors, in both samples, a higher frequency in the discourse of women has been noted; on the other hand, we also perceived differences relating to age and educational level criteria between the two corpora.
