Luis Machuca, arquitecto e ingeniero militar

Abstract

The architect Luis Machuca was the grand master of works at the Alhambra between 1549 and 1572, a post he inherited from his father, Pedro Machuca. His area of responsability encompassed the rehabilitation and renovation of the old royal houses (the Palacio de Comares and the Palacio de Los Leones) as well as further development in the construction of the Palace ordered by Emperor Charles V and first begun by Pedro Machuca -in particular, the western and eastern facades, the chapel and the circular patio. Luis Machuca also played an important role as a military engineer, taking charge of the Alhambra fortress as well as the fortifications on the coast, the defense of wich was the prerogative of the General Captain of the Kingdom of Granada, the Count of Tendilla, mayor of the Alhambra. In addition to implementing the restoration and modernization of preexisting fortifications, Luis Machuca drew up the general tower desing tha reinforced defensive potential along the coast in the sixteenth century.
