El Achelense de la Cueva del Ángel(Lucena, Córdoba)

Abstract

The Cueva del Ángel in Lucena, Spain, serves as a significant Pleistocene archaeological site, providing insights into the Middle to Upper Pleistocene transition. Excavations have uncovered a rich archaeological and paleontological record within the karstic formations of the Sierra de Aras, revealing extensive stratigraphic units filled with burnt bone remains, lithic tools, and evidence of persistent human activity. The site's stratigraphy, particularly through the J/K profile, indicates a complex sedimentary fill extending beyond 5 meters in depth, comprising twenty stratigraphic units without reaching bedrock, highlighting continuous and sustained human occupation. The findings suggest a strategic use of the site by hunter-gatherers, employing fire extensively for processing animal carcasses and potentially for habitat management. The stratigraphic continuity and lack of abandonment levels reinforce the hypothesis of a prolonged human presence, shaping the site into a longstanding habitat with diversified tool use and economic strategies tailored to the local environment and resource availability.
