La iglesia electrónica en América Latina

Abstract

En el número 21 de Chasqui, correspondiente a enero - marzo de 1987, y con el título "Iglesia Electrónica & Marketing" señalábamos que el concepto "Iglesia Electrónica" designa un fenómeno bastante peculiar y característico de la realidad norteamericana, a saber el intenso y creciente uso de los medios electrónicos, especialmente de fa TV, por parte de dirigencias religiosas fuertemente personalizadas y autónomas respecto de las denominaciones cristianas tradicionales. Asimismo decíamos que se la identifica como "Religión Comercial, Márketing de la Fe, Mesianismo Electrónico" y otros.conceptos parecidos, que los protagonistas de este nuevo movimiento han llegado a crear verdaderos imperios electrónicos, con gigantescas infraestructuras, estaciones de retransmisión, acceso garantizado a satélites, centros de producción de programas, incluidos doblajes a diversas lenguas, nexos con redes radiofónicas y hasta universidades propias. Todo parece indicar, señalábamos, que las iglesias establecidas prefieren privilegiar sus bases pastorales de tipo tradicional. Era preciso conocer mínimamente este fenómeno en su desarrollo en Estados Unidos para poder establecer las semejanzas y diferencias con los programas religiosos electrónicos de América Latina.
