Abstract

This study becomes a first approach to the personality of Josep Gudiol Cunill as historian of Catalan Gothic painting. The text presents Gudiol as one of the fathers of modern art history in Catalonia, and goes deep into his scientific career with an emphasis on those publications or methodological lines that distinguish his work. Based on the previous few studies, especially by Joseph Puiggarí and in parallel to those of Raimon Casellas and Salvador Sanpere i Miquel, Gudiol carried out positivism with the publication of documents with informations about the development of Catalan painting in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. However, it was sin-gled out from his contemporaries thanks to his studies in areas such as the iconographic analysis, the association of textual sources to the scenes depicted in the altarpieces, or the interpretation, meaning and context of liturgical works. The latter makes him become an absolute pioneer in the Hispanic context, since its open-mindedness when confronting representations puts him on the level of international benchmarks such as Émile Mâle.
