Braz Burity: ommes pro veritate

Abstract

ABSTRACT: During his life time Joaquim Madureira / Braz Burity performed, along with other occupations, those of a writer, a journalist, a theatre critic and an art critic. His voice takes us to an era shaped by noble esthetic, social and political ideals aiming at the renovation of a decadent society. A paradigm of his time, he lived intensely and authentically such ideals and struggled for them vigorously in the areas that most appealed to him: politics and arts. Since the available information about this striking character was but scarce, we have tried, throughout our research, to outline the circumstances of his life and critical vision as far as possible. We have paid special attention to his unique contribution, coloured by his expressive and passionate writings, to both the memory of the Lisbon theatrical activity at the beginning of the twentieth century and to a dignified national theatre criticism.
