Neologia de imprensa do português

Abstract

The main objective of this thesis is to study Portuguese neology, based on the collection and classification of 9164 neologisms found in texts published in the portuguese written press between 2004 and 2011, detected by the Obsrvatório de Neologia do Português (Portuguese Neologism Observatory – ONP). It aims to obtain a clearer and more objective representation of recent diachronic variation on a lexical level, contributing to a more detailed characterisation of contemporary Portuguese. Besides the Introduction, Conclusion, Bibliography and Appendix, this thesis has four chapters. Chapter 1, Neology and Neologism: concepts, types, and criteria, explores the concepts of neolpgy and neologism, through the presentation of studies byauthors who have made the most significant contribution to their definition and development. Different approaches to the classification of neologisms are also presented and detection criteria are described. Chapter 2, Methodologies for neology work, describes neology projects and stages in neology work, considering the features of manual and semaiautomatic detection, the tools used and the completion and analysis of neologism records. Chaper 3, Description of ONP neologisms, presents the distribuition of the neologisms collected, in view of how they are formed. Each process is characterised in three parts: presentation of the Neorom classification guigelines; distribution and analysis of ONP data; and a presentation of the interferences in their formation process that cause most classification difficulties. Chapter 4, Contributions to improvements in neology studies, presents the issues considered most importante for optimisation of the work of the ONP. Reassessment of the classification types used and the application of neologicity filters to the data collected are presented as priority tasks, as is the review of the exclusion corpus, the adaptation of neologismo records and the way the data is used.
