O tempo no luto e o luto no tempo : relação entre a perspetiva temporal e o luto complicado

Abstract

The lost of a loved one implies a process of adaptation and readjustment of the life of the grievers. Sometimes, the response to this process is expressed by severe and lengthy symptoms that characterize complicated grief. By being a complex reaction with much impact on people’s lives, it is important to understand which variables may be related to it and in which it is possible to intervene. The main aim of this study is to verify if there is a relation between Complicated Grief and Time Perspective, since the temporal focus has an influence on many mental processes. Four instruments were used for data collection: Inventory of Complicated Grief (ICG) – adapted by Frade (2010); Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory Revised (ZTPI-R) – adapted by Ortuño and Gamboa (2009); Transcendental-Future Time Perspective Scale (TFTPS) – adapted by Ortuño, Paixão and Janeiro (2013); and the Sociodemographic Questionnaire. There were 146 participants in this investigation, aged between 18 and 65 years old (M=35.19, SD=14.71). The results showed that, in the sample of this study, it was possible to detect statistically significant relationships between the ICG scale, “Complicated Grief”, and the ZTPI scales, “Past Negative” and “Present Fatalist”. There were no significant differences between the participants' genders or age groups, nor in variables related to the loss, such as the cause of death and the degree of kinship with the deceased. Significant differences were found between the age groups of the deceased. Despite the limitations of the study, it allows us to draw clinical implications relevant to the intervention of grief and several suggestions for future investigations.
