Saramago: expectativas frustradas

Saramago: expectativas frustradas

Abstract

When reading several works by the same author, it is a common experience to recognize a particular style, but to recognize also that something else must be implied in the way which springs from the questions we usually ask when we have such an experience. This essay argues for an intention to break with expectations on the books of Saramago. This is done by looking at and interpreting different passages in various books. By analyzing different tricks, tropes and devices we find there is a recurrent reflection with regards to literature and the way the author thinks about and presents his art.
