Abstract

Podem reconhecer-se, no conjunto destes escritos, três campos predominantes ou preferenciais – nomeadamente a sátira, o surto setecentista do romance moderno e o desenvolvimento de componentes utópicas e distópicas. Referidos, sobretudo, ao contexto histórico-cultural dos séculos XVII e XVIII, esses campos revelam nexos ou confluências assinaláveis que permitem perceber melhor, por exemplo, como o modo satírico foi instrumental na transição para um romance moderno realista, especialmente o praticado por Henry Fielding, em nítida contraposição, de inicial matriz cervantina, às longas narrativas palacianas anteriormente em voga na Europa. É precisamente a percepção de tais nexos e confluências que constitui, ao que creio, o principal factor de orientação e unidade da pesquisa, na maioria dos estudos agora coligidos. A eles se junta um conjunto de ensaios sobre imagens de uma insularidade ocasionalmente não alheia à tradição utópica, eventualmente com alguns antecedentes no romance setecentista Robinson Crusoe, de Daniel Defoe, e presentes em narrativas de ficção britânicas do século XX, além de um ou dois artigos relacionados com os Estudos Anglísticos em contexto didáctico, embora não directamente centrados nas áreas preferenciais indicadas.
