Abstract

A lot of uncertainty exists regarding the role of holistic processing in our ability to perceive and recognize faces. Some studies show evidence that correlations exist between holistic processing and face perception and face recognition while others show the exact opposite. Our main objective with this thesis, is to propose a study that would solve some of the main problems we found with current research, namely the fact that many researchers use insufficient evidence to make big claims on the role of holistic processing and also to study the correlations between face perception and face memory. To do that, we suggest the use of multiple tasks for face memory, face perception and holistic processing to obtain strong and reliable evidence. A secondary purpose was also to create a paper with a summary on the history of research on the role of holistic processing in the ability to perceive and recognize faces, as it could be of help to future researchers. Finally, we hoped that this research would shed new light on our knowledge about face perception and face recognition as well as serve as a springboard to any new studies looking to pry deeper into these same topics.
