Abstract

No prólogo, claramente encomiástico, da 2.ª edição das Viagens na Minha Terra, afirma-se que o seu autor é um erudito “educado na pureza clássica da antiguidade, e versado depois em todos as outras literaturas”. Em concreto, diz-se que Almeida Garrett é “igualmente familiar com” trinta e quatro escritores e poetas de diversas épocas, correntes artísticas e nacionalidades. Nomeados dicotomicamente ao lado de espanhóis, franceses, ingleses, alemães e italianos (a que se acrescentam os enciclopedistas, “os Santos Padres”, a Bíblia e as “tradições sânscritas”), Homero, Platão, Tucídides, Horácio, Eurípides e Virgílio representam simultânea e exemplarmente a estética e os principais géneros literários e ramos do conhecimento (“Orador e poeta, historiador e filósofo”) em que o romancista português se dizia entendido. Neste texto estuda-se de que modo a literatura clássica aparece figurada e transformada, por meio de virtuosos artifícios discursivos, na obra do primeiro romântico português publicada até àquele ano de 1846. Havendo espaço para uma reflexão alargada sobre outros poetas latinos, a presença de Virgílio na Lírica de João Mínimo e nas Viagens será cuidadosamente analisada.
