The present study aimed to explore the ways in which affection between grandparents and grandchildren is associated with grandchildren’s psychological well-being. For that purpose, a translation of Daniel Mansson’s “The Grandchildren Received Affection Scale” (2013c) and initial studies for its adaption were conducted. As the main hypothesis, a mediation-type relationship was expected of the relationship between the grandparents-grandchildren dimension (grandparentsgrandchildren affection and family rituals) and the grandchildren’s psychological well-being dimension, with family climate acting as the mediator. The sample was comprised of 200 young adults with ages from 18 to 30 years old (M=23,7; SD=2,81), 151 of them were female and 49 male. Participants were asked to fill out The Grandchildren Received Affection Scale (Arsénio, Ribeiro & Pedro, 2018), The Family Ritual Questionnaire (Annual Commemorations) (Crespo & Lind, 2004), the Family Climate Inventory (estudos de adaptação inicial para Portugal por Francisco, 2015) and the Psychological Well-being Scale (Novo, Silva & Peralta, 1997). The psychometric quality of The Grandchildren Received Affection Scale was found to have similar results to those of the original study. Results showed the relationship between the grandparents-grandchildren dimension is associated with the grandchildren’s psychological well-being, mediated by family climate. Positive associations in affection between grandparents-grandchildren, the meaning of family rituals in annual commemorations, family climate and grandchildren’s psychological well-being were also found. Also, gender differences and contact frequency between grandparents-grandchildren were found to be positively related to the study variables. The implications of these results are discussed.
As implicações destes resultados serão discutidas.
