Abstract

The present study, with mothers of children with Language Problems (LP), aims: (1) to characterize parenting stress and the mothers’ perception of the child’s social skills and behavior, according to the child’s sex and age; (2) to determine whether the study dimensions vary according to the type of LP; (3) to explore the relationship between these dimensions; (4) to analyze the relationship of each dimension with maternal sociodemographic variables (level of schooling and social class) and the mother’s concerns regarding the behavior of the child. There were 36 participants in this study, and the target-children were aged between 3 and 6 years. Two instruments were used, the Portuguese versions of the Parental Stress Index and the Preschool and Kindergarten Behavior Scales – Second Edition, in addition to a questionnaire to collect information (sociodemographic, referring to maternal concerns, child development and LP). The results showed that stress (parent domain) was higher in mothers of boys (vs. girls) and older (5-6 years vs 3-4 years) children. Furthermore, mothers of children with Developmental Language Disorders, compared to children with Phonological Disorder, reported higher levels of parenting stress (child domain) and perceived lower levels of the child’s social skills. An association of parenting stress (child domain) with social skills (negative) and externalized (positive) behavior were observed. Parenting stress (child domain) was also found to be higher in the mothers of lower social classes. Finally, maternal concern with the child’s behavior was positively associated with parenting stress and externalized behavior, and negatively associated with social skills. The results contribute to furthering the knowledge of LP in younger children, which has not received sufficient attention from an empirical point of view.
