Abstract

To the eyes of literature, the alexithymic functionality is representative in deficits at the processing level and emotional regulation. There are known difficulties inherent in the psychotherapeutic process with patients classified as alexithymics. In this assumption, this study proposes to explore the relationships between the alexithymic characteristics and the constructs related to the emotional functioning - difficulties of regulation and emotional processing and symptomatology. It is important to contribute to the understanding of the relations between the variables and understand the implications of these relationships for the conceptualization and psychotherapeutic practices. For such, we compared the subsamples that distinguish in terms of emotional functioning: (1) alexithymics; (2) non-alexithymic. The results support the presumption of the significant presence of symptomatology and difficulties in emotional processing in alexithymia. Regarding the differential impacts at the sample level, the results point to the differentiating role of all variables under study. It is suggested the importance of taking this dimension into account in the psychotherapeutic intervention, in the sense of understanding the emotional processes underlying the alexithymic functioning, in order to enhance clinical work.
