Abstract

Background: Perfectionism is a multidimensional and predominant personality trait. Despite the fact that the commitment to obtain high standards is not pathological by itself, there is the risk of overcoming the threshold of adaptive perfectionism, calling into question, for example, the level of satisfaction with life, one of the pillars of well-being, defined as the cognitive assessment of a person's life as an all and/or of specific living domains. Aims: This literature review intends to study the impact of perfectionism, in its different dimensions, on people's life satisfaction. Methods: Through the databases PubMed, B-On and PsychoInfo was done a literature research, resorting to the keywords: Perfectionism, Multidimensional Perfectionism and Life Satisfaction. It was included information from 8 studies covering different dimensions of perfectionism and different domains of life satisfaction. Studies that related perfectionism with other aspects of well-being, psychological stress and/or with physical and/or mental pathology, were not included. Results: Of the 7 studies according to the “Multidimensional - two-subtypes” and Tripartite Models, it was found that healthy/adaptive perfectionists presented greater life satisfaction and unhealthy/maladaptive ones a more negative correlation. In the only study according to the Model 2x2 that evaluated a specific domain of life satisfaction, it should be noted that mixed perfectionists revealed intermediate results. For the non-perfectionists it was not possible to obtain a concrete result although most of the studies demonstrated intermediate levels. Conclusions: Through this review, it becomes perceptible that perfectionism is a significant predictor of life satisfaction. Therefore, it would therefore be important to implement mental health prevention strategies in educational establishments, with foccus on the negative impact of perfectionism. In future studies, it would also be very important to consider more uniform criteria and more professionally broader populations, in order to achieve more concrete results.
