Visibilidade e descrição

Abstract

This dissertation is the outcome of my reflection on visibility and description in painting and in literature. It does not aim at contributing to the many theories involved in the issue or at comparing the two arts. Pictorial visibility is dealt with in its relation to the medium, when deliberately used to show that painting is to be seen as painting and not as a representation of reality. As for literary visibility, the focus is on the possibility of achieving the effects of painting by means of literary writing. “Big Two-hearted River” by Ernest Hemingway is used to discuss the concept of vivid description as well as the implications brought about by such designations as “scenic writing” or “pictorial statement”. Thus, the aim is to achieve a clearer understanding of the use of pictorial metaphors in literary criticism and the use of literary metaphors in art criticism. The attempt is to define description standing on its own or in confrontation to narration both in literary narrative and in painting.
