Personalidade e sintomatologia : meia-idade tardia e terceira-idade

Abstract

The present thesis focuses on the study of personality and the psycho-pathological symptomatology in late middle-age and third-age individuals. It has as objectives to explore the differences between two periods of life, the late middle-age and third age, regarding the development of the dimensions of personality and the occurrence of psychopathological symptomatology. It aims to evaluate the relevance of socio-demographic variables in psycho-pathological symptomatology in the two periods of life. Sample: This investigation is part of a larger study, with 338 participants recruited from the researchers’ relation sphere. The present study is limited to a sample of 43 participants, aged from 55 to 82 years old. The instruments used were the Inventory of Five Factors - NEO-FFI (Costa, P. T. & McCrae, R. R., 1989, 1992), translated and adapted in Portugal by Lima e Simões (2001) and the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI; Derogatis & Melisaratos, 1983), translated and adapted by Canavarro (1999). The results allow to verify that (1) somatic disorder increases with the advancement of age, in opposition to depression, hostility and psychoticism that decline with the aging process; (2) the senior participants have more somatic symptoms than the late middle-age participants who have more obsessionscompulsions, higher levels of interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobic anxiety, paranoid ideation and psychoticism; (3) neuroticism is associated with obsession-compulsions, psychoticism, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobic anxiety and paranoid ideation. Agreeableness is related to lower psychoticism rates; (4) Men show lower levels of phobic anxiety than women. The rates of phobic anxiety are as smaller as the economic situation is higher. The better the quality of contact in friendships the less elevated are the rates of psycho-pathological symptomatology related to interpersonal sensitivity, anxiety, hostility, paranoid ideation and psychoticism.
