Abstract

A vida e obra de Aurélia de Sousa, uma mulher artista na vanguarda da sua época. Aurélia de Sousa teve o seu «quarto só para si», expressão que a escritora britânica Virginia Woolf inventou nos anos 1920 para designar o espaço — físico e metafórico — de que as mulheres precisavam para criar. O resultado dessa libertação artística está em Aurélia de Sousa, Mulher Artista, livro centrado na vida e obra da pintora e fotógrafa portuense que viveu a passagem do século XIX para o século XX sem abdicar do seu direito a uma carreira artística profissional. Assinalando o 150.º aniversário do nascimento da pintora, este livro-catálogo, coordenado por Filipa Lowndes Vicente, acompanha a exposição homónima patente no Porto e em Matosinhos. «Conservadora nos motivos, genial e inovadora no traço e na composição, Aurélia de Sousa deu continuidade ao naturalismo que imperava na pintura portuguesa do seu tempo, acrescentando-lhe apontamentos impressionistas, realistas e até mesmo neo-realistas.» Rui Moreira, Apresentação
