Das belas-artes à arte de tatuar: dinâmicas recentes no mundo português da tatuagem

Abstract

Praticada em moldes amadorísticos, na viragem para o século XX a tatuagem começa a ser comercializada por entre meios de «[...] becos e de facadas [...]», descreve o dândi João do Rio na sua obra A Alma Encantadora das Ruas (1908, 18). Por aí, bairros pouco reputados onde as casas de tatuar tinham prostíbulos como vizinhança, se recrutava maioritariamente a sua clientela, figuras sociais associadas à boémia e à marginalidade: marinheiros, estivadores, prostitutas, reclusos, membros de gangs e máfias, a par de outro tipo de malandros (Atkinson 2003; Fisher 2002; Peixoto 1990). De estatuto social homólogo ao do seu público, eram rufiões oriundos de meios operários e populares que vendiam os seus serviços de tatuagem, prática que geralmente haviam aprendido no cárcere ou na vida militar.
