O papel do alongamento no reconhecimento visual de objetos manipuláveis

Abstract

É largamente reconhecido na literatura científica que a via visual ventral é responsável pelo reconhecimento visual dos objetos, ao passo que a via visual dorsal processa informação relativa à ação orientada para o objecto. Mais recentemente, foi sugerido que a informação processada pela via dorsal pode influenciar o reconhecimento de objetos. A presente dissertação visa compreender melhor a natureza dessa informação dorsal que participa no reconhecimento. São apresentados dois estudos experimentais que consistem num estudo comportamental de lateralização numa tarefa de categorização (Experiência 1) e um estudo com sistema de mapeamento de respostas motoras (Experiência 2). Ambos os estudos experimentais permitiram demonstrar que a informação da via dorsal é relevante para o reconhecimento de objetos manipuláveis como ferramentas, e que a natureza dessa informação está relacionada com o formato alongado destes objetos. De facto, estímulos de forma alongada, independentemente da sua categoria semântica e familiaridade, quando processados pela via visual dorsal, envolviam informação visuomotora relacionada com o agarrar dos objetos ao fornecer uma pista para o planeamento da ação sob estes, e desta forma participando na categorização de objetos manipuláveis.

It is largely recognized in the scientific literature that the ventral visual pathway is responsible for visual recognition of objects, while the visual pathway dorsal processes information relating to the object-oriented action. More recently, it was suggested that information processed by the dorsal pathway can influence the recognition of objects. The goal of the present dissertation is to demonstrate this influence and better understand the nature of this dorsal information involved in recognition. Two experimental studies are presented, namely a study of behavioral lateralization in a categorization task (Experiment 1) and a study with a motor response mapping system (Experiment 2). Both experimental studies showed that the dorsal information is relevant to recognition of manipulable objects as tools, and the nature of the information that is related to the elongated shape of the object. In fact, when processed by the dorsal visual pathway, elongated stimuli regardless of their semantic category and familiarity, elicited information related visuomotor grasping of objects to provide a clue for the planning of action under these, thus influencing the categorization manipulable objects.
