SITY, l’App tutela e valorizzazione del patrimonio archeologico

Abstract

In 2018, the European Union declared the Year of Cultural Heritage (EU Decision 2017/864) to encourage the sharing and enhancement of cultural assets across the continent. In this context, the Sity app project was developed, which won the "Premio Antonella Fiammenghi" in October 2017 at the Mediterranean Archaeological Tourism Market in Paestum (SA). The goal of Sity was to create an app that utilizes geofencing technology to notify users on Android smartphones when they enter a one-kilometer radius of an archaeological site listed in the app’s database. The first step involved collecting and classifying data from Google’s Play Store and Apple’s AppStore platforms to conduct a detailed market analysis and assess the presence of potential competing apps. It was found that, at present, no app exists that combines geofencing and maps to promote cultural and archaeological heritage. The second phase focused on a careful evaluation of each development step, starting from conceptual design, continuing through concrete realization, and culminating in the actual implementation of the app. The use of Sity is expected to significantly increase visits to small, under-promoted museums (due to lack of funding or interest), providing greater visibility and boosting economic revenue for museums and local or state institutions.
