In 1971, Rivière and De Varine defined a new form of museum, called the Ecomuseum, "which ensures research, presentation, and enhancement functions for assets representative of an environment and the ways of life related to it, with the participation of the local population." More than 100 years after its formal establishment with exclusive responsibility assigned to the Navy, one wonders if the Naval Historical Museum of Venice, now managed by a private company under the guidance of the Ministry of Defense, will be able to evolve from a Wunderkammer of limited educational impact, focused on the accumulation of objects, to an internationally recognized museum, with a wider reach, within the architectural space that should increasingly become freely accessible within the Arsenal of Venice.
