Abstract

Nei primi decenni del Cinquecento la gara tra le confraternite mariane di Palermo riportò nel dibattito architettonico il tema della chiesa impostata su colonne. Il mito normanno e le contemporanee ricerche del Nord Italia furono sintetizzate per realizzare edifici moderni e suggestivi. In breve tempo la vicenda innescò la costruzione di una serie di nuove fabbriche colonnari nell'intera isola: Santa Maria di Portosalvo, Santa Maria della Catena, Santa Maria la Nova,Santa Maria del Gesù a Trapani,la chiesa madre di Caltabellotta e il San Francesco a Tortorici.
