Abstract

The literature has suggested a positive association between helicopter parenting and the development of child internalization disorders. Through a cross-sectional quantitative design, the present study aimed to analyze: (1) the relationship between parental and branch anxiety and helicopter parenting; (2) the differences between helicopter parenting perceived by children in relation to parents and helicopter parenting perceived by father and mother; (3) the mediating role of helicopter parenting in the relationship between parental anxiety and filial anxiety; and (4) the potential moderating role of parental anxiety in the relationship between helicopter parenting and branch anxiety. The sample consisted of 53 family triads (father, mother and child), 46 mother and child dyads and 3 father and son dyads, making a total of 257 participants (N = 257). The children were between 18 and 30 years old. The results showed that parent helicopter parenting perceived by children works as an explanatory mechanism of the relationship between maternal and branch anxiety. Finally, the results suggest that maternal anxiety acts as a moderator of the relationship between parent-perceived helicopter parenting and child anxiety. The results were discussed and further studies were proposed to fill the existing gaps. The implications for clinical and family practice were also presented.
