Autoconceito, autoestima e escolha do parceiro ideal

Abstract

This exploratory research aims to understand the relation between the following variables: self-concept, self-esteem and choosing the ideal partner. To this end, the total sample contemplated 400 participants with an age average of 25.78 and a standard deviation of 4.716. The data collection was conducted by using the virtual platform “Google Drive”. The protocol incorporated the Self-Concept Clinical Inventory (Vaz Serra, 1985), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 2001) and the Ideal Partner Attributes Scale (Gomes, 2010) which was adapted following the studies conducted by Buss & Barnes (1986) and in light of the field of Evolutionary Psychology. This scale is divided into 5 sub-dimensions (affectionateness, traditional, athleticism, sociability and family). The results demonstrate that the higher the self-concept, the more one values the sub-dimensions of choosing the ideal partner (sociability p=0.001; affectionateness p <0.001; traditional p=0.726; family p=0.333; athleticism p <0.043). Furthermore, it became clear that there are considerable gender differences regarding the affective (female p=0.000; male p=0.000) and athletic (female p=0,200; male p=0,200) sub-dimensions with women generally giving more importance to the emotional aspect and men to physical attractiveness. In order to supplement the achieved results, a study of equally exploratory nature was carried out regarding intermediary variables.
