Turismo de voluntariado: a perspectiva do voluntariado no turismo

Abstract

The present dissertation focuses on the phenomenon of Volunteer Tourism, which recently arrived in Portugal, promoted by a Portuguese institution recognized internationally, the Assistência Médica Internacional, a pioneer in the implementation of such projects in Portugal, and by a U.S. organization, whose business focuses on creating and managing such programs throughout the world, Global Volunteers, who initiated a partnership with the Municipality of Beja, in order to establish a program at that location. This research includes two case studies, the "Aventura Solidária" Assistência Médica Internacional program and the Global Volunteers program in Beja, taking as case study the travel experience in the Volunteer component, through firsthand accounts of volunteer tourists in both cases. It seeks to explore the experiences of volunteer tourists, their motivations and expectations, and the subsequent narrative of the interaction between them and the host community, and how this experience is manifested in the process of self development.
