Características personalísticas e severidade da sintomatologia depressiva

Abstract

Al-Zuabi & Al-Suwayan (2004) defend the importance of assessing the severity of depressive symptoms. A study carried out by Hirschfeld & Klerm (1979, in Orsini, 2006), the authors concluded that there are specific characteristics of the personality of patients with diagnosis of depression, among which are introvert, dependent, pessimistic and have low selfconfidence. The present study seeks to contribute to a deeper knowledge about the influence of certain characteristics of the personality in the severity of depressive symptoms. To this end, it was collected a sample of 93 participants, residents in the district of Castelo Branco, 44 of these, the clinical sample, of both sexes, older than 16 years, diagnosed with depression, who attend the Psychology Service Unit Local Health of Castelo Branco - Hospital Amato Lusitano, and the remaining 49 subjects, of both sexes, older than 16 years, of the normative sample. The instruments used for data collection were IACLIDE, to assess the severity of depressive symptoms, the Mini-Mult, to assess personality traits, and in the case of participants from the clinical sample, the clinical procedures to collect biographical data and other information concerning the clinical data. The results obtained showed, in relation to personality traits, that clinical subjects had a mean values higher in the eight clinical scales of the Mini-Mult, compared with the subjects of the normative sample. Regarding the severity of depressive symptoms in relation to personality traits it appears that there are significant differences in the scales of Hypochondriasis, Hysteria, Depression and Psychasthenia in relation to severity of depression. It was also established that traits of Depression and Schizophrenia significantly worsen the depression, that is, individuals with these personality traits tend to develop more severe depressions. In this sense it is accepted the central question of this study, and concluded that there are certain personality traits that can significantly influence the severity of depressive symptoms in subjects.
