Abstract

The present study examines the relation between parenting styles and emotional regulation in adolescents. The sample consisted of 125 adolescents aged between 12 and 15 years (Mean = 13.35, SD = 0.99). Data collection was carried out through contact with public schools (groups of schools) and private entities (tutoring centers), using a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Parenting Behavior Questionnaire revised and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale short form. The results of the study showed a difference in the perception of the Father's and Mother's parenting styles, with higher values on the Mother's scale. A correlation was found between parenting styles and difficulties in emotional regulation. Furthermore, the promotion of warmth by the father figure has been shown to predict the difficulty in impulse control in adolescents. In conclusion, positive educational styles have been shown to contribute to the development of adaptive emotional regulation capabilities in adolescents.
