Abstract

Vivemos num mundo que se desenvolve freneticamente e tem como consequência a aceleração industrial com impacto na evolução da sociedade, intensificando-se numa sociedade fortemente consumista baseada em produtos de fontes não renováveis. O facto de a indústria têxtil ser um dos setores determinantes para a poluição a nível mundial, tem sido alvo de grande debate nacional e internacional, refletindo-se na crescente preocupação do público consumista que atenta cada vez mais nos produtos que adquirem e que se preocupam com as alterações climáticas. Em consonância, as empresas têm investido cada vez mais em soluções que se aproximem mais das necessidades que o consumidor procura. Deste modo, a presente dissertação visa testar soluções mais ecológicas, transpondo-as para o nosso quotidiano, através de biopolímeros e biopigmentos biodegradáveis, obtidos de forma sustentável e que se têm revelado uma aposta determinante. É o caso da celulose bacteriana que tem sido utilizada em diversos projetos de design de moda, e a utilização de pigmentos naturais, a partir do cultivo de bactérias produtoras de pigmentos. Desta forma, o trabalho desta dissertação investigou a produção e utilização de celulose bacteriana e de pigmentos bacterianos, para a coleção Celubac Collection como uma alternativa para uma moda mais sustentável. Os resultados revelaram-se promissores no que respeita à obtenção de materiais e cores. Existem ainda muitas barreiras a ultrapassar, e alguns inconvenientes no que respeita a estas alternativas, mas a prova de conceito é conseguida. Não restam dúvidas de que, a par de tantas outras transformações quotidianas, a indústria da moda precisa de se modificar através de tecnologias inovadoras que possibilitam uma oferta aos consumidores com qualidade, e uma sensibilização para as preocupações ambientais.

We live in a world that develops frenetically and has, as a consequence, the industrial acceleration with impact on the evolution of society, intensifying in a strongly consumerist society based on products from non-renewable sources. The fact that the textile industry is one of the determining sectors for global pollution has been the subject of great national and international debate, reflected in the growing concern of the consuming public, who pay more and more attention to the products they buy and are worried about climate change. In line with this, companies have increasingly invested in solutions that are closer to the needs that the consumer seeks to satisfy. Thus, this MSc Thesis aims to test more ecological solutions, transposing them into our daily lives, through biopolymers and biopigments that are biodegradable, developed in a sustainable way and that have proved to be a decisive bet. This is the case of bacterial cellulose that has been used in several fashion design projects, and the use of natural pigments, being the cultivation of bacterial pigments. In this way, the work of this dissertation investigated the production and use of bacterial cellulose and bacterial pigments, for the Celubac Collection as a more sustainable fashion industry. The results were promising in terms of obtaining materials and colors. There are still many barriers to overcome, and some drawbacks regarding these alternatives, but proof of concept is achieved. There is no doubt that, along with so many other daily transformations, the fashion industry needs to change through innovative technologies that enable a quality offer to consumers, and an awareness of environmental concerns.
