Coco – Um Alimento Funcional?

Abstract

In recent years, coconut has been the target of much research, from which several beneficial properties to human health have been inferred, which motivated the recommendation of its consumption, although this is controversial. In this sense, this work aims to clarify what is the current scientific evidence. Coconut is a safe food for consumption and is not associated with known harmful effects. In turn, coconut water and coconut oil are the most consumed and investigated food derivatives of coconut. Therefore, in this work, its properties, its effects, and its applicability in health, particularly in cardiovascular health, in some infectious diseases and in Alzheimer's disease, were explored. Finally, it was also concluded that coconut is a food with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, vasodilating, bactericidal, fungicidal, and antiviral properties. However, the scientific evidence available to date is still limited to ascertain whether the properties that are recognized for it, have a measurable clinical impact.
