A Mentira - Contra a Mentira

Abstract

«O que mais ardentemente a alma deseja senão a verdade?» (Comentário ao Evangelho de São João, 26, 5). «Ó verdade, verdade! Quão intimamente a medula da minha alma suspirava por ti (...) A vida feliz é a alegria que vem da verdade; (...) pois todos querem a alegria que vem da verdade (...). Criaste-nos para ti, Senhor, e o nosso coração anda inquieto até que descanse em ti.» (Confissões, III, 6, 10; X, 22, 33; I, 1, 1). São célebres estas fórmulas que pontuam a vasta obra de Santo Agostinho. Com elas, em vez de entrarmos por trás, qual porta da traição - adequando-nos ao tema dos opúsculos Acerca da Mentira agora traduzidos -, pretendemos entrar pela frente, pela porta principal. Só por causa da verdade Agostinho se interessou e decidiu tratar o tema da mentira.
