Graciosa, Açores. A capital do mergulho

Abstract

ABSTRACT: In any dive on the coast of Graciosa the structural complexity of the environment is quite visible. There are rocky peaks alternating with piles of stones or blocks, caves, arches and wrecks. Even the monotony of the sandy bottoms is broken by reefs and banks. This diversity of settings allows great riches of ecological niches. The structuring organisms are marine macro algae, displaying luxuriant forms and colours, and covering the rocks almost entirely. Among the algae many species of invertebrate animals can be found: from the vibrant red sea stars to the tiny nudibranchs, authentic underwater jewels. Over the sea bottoms, swimming, one can see countless and colorful fish of diverse species. The tameness and abundance of the groupers still cause amazement today as they did in the 1960s to Professor. Luiz Saldanha. In darker areas the black coral, rare in other parts of the world, is easily observed and in the countless banks manta rays, sharks and turtles swin by. The coast of Graciosa, full of life, presents a diverse pattern of colours and shapes wich make each dive a motive for interest and pleasure.
