A palatalização e a sibilante [∫] no português europeu

Abstract

A palatal [∫], resultado da palatalização de diferentes grupos consonantais na história da Língua, apresenta um quadro fonológico particular, que a distingue das outras consoantes na cadeia silábica. Por um lado, tem a capacidade singular de formar uma rima com um núcleo vazio, dando origem a aglomerados fonéticos de consoantes como, por exemplo, [∫pr], [∫kl], [∫ps] ou [∫pt], os quais não têm ligação, no esqueleto silábico, a um constituinte; por outro lado, vêmo-la combinada com ditongos, como em ex- [ej∫], o que exige um esforço explicativo adicional.
