A Companhia de Jesus e a formação do clero japonês

Abstract

The present research endeavor seeks to provide comprehensive insights into the implementation of the "modus acomodatio" doctrine within the context of Japan. This will be accomplished through a meticulous examination of the formation of the Japanese clergy within the Society of Jesus. Within this academic pursuit, our primary objectives include elucidating the organizational structure of the Society of Jesus in Japan, assessing the presence and contributions of Japanese Dojuku preachers, scrutinizing the operational dynamics of the Seminaries located in Arima, Kyoto, and Nagasaki (recognized as the pivotal hubs for evangelization), and assessing the pivotal role played by St. Paul's College in shaping the Japanese clergy. In conjunction with this central theme, our study will place special emphasis on the pivotal roles played by notable figures such as the Jesuit Alessandro Valignano and the Bishop of Japan, Luís Cerqueira. Their respective evangelical initiatives aimed at fostering the development of a native clergy will be subjected to an in-depth examination. Furthermore, this inquiry will delve into the discourse surrounding the establishment of a native clergy by analyzing private correspondence among various members of the Society of Jesus in Japan. The objective is to provide a balanced assessment of arguments both in favor of and opposed to the creation of such a clergy. Notably, this analysis will include a comprehensive review of the report authored by the Jesuit Mateus de Couros, which delves into themes encompassing Education, Sexuality, and the aspirations of the Japanese individuals within the confines of the Society of Jesus. In conclusion, this study will culminate in an exploration of potential rivalries that may have emerged between European and Japanese missionaries. The manner in which these rivalries manifested both within and beyond the purview of the Society of Jesus will be thoroughly examined, shedding light on the intricate dynamics of this historical period.
