Abstract

This study aims to explore, in a sample of Portuguese schools, if there is an impact of school leadership, particularly of the principal, on students` outcomes. The study adopts mixed-methods, combining the analysis of national examination, questionnaire surveys, structured open-ended interviews (Principals) and focus group (Students, Teachers and Head of Department). Data were analyzed using the software NVivo 10 and SPSS 22. From the analysis of the results, we conclude that there is an indirect influence between the Principal´s leadership practices and students´ outcomes. This one is done through school improvement processes and through the distribution of leadership among school teachers. School improvement promotes conditions for the teachers to develop their work and improve the quality of teaching, which has a positive and direct impact on learning and raises the level of student´s engagement in school. This is also accomplished through the influence of the Principal´s leadership practices on teachers´ work: directly or through the heads of department. On the other hand we can also imply the student´s outcomes influence school organization and Principal´s practices, especially in regard to the distribution of the teaching service and the preparation of timetables.
