Abstract

The environment is configured in the contemporary culture as an imperative challenge posed to society. The need to look at the environment in its various dimensions: cultural, ethical, aesthetic, technological and scientific, urges that cultural studies also engage in this debate. The object of analysis of the work summarized in this dissertation is the temporary exhibit, Sea Turtles, the journey, that can be visited at the Oceanário de Lisboa since 2011. Taking as a starting point the discipline designated for visitor studies, we structured the research plan using methods such as timing and tracking, and exit’s survey. Through an analysis of cultural representations of the oceans and environmental issues, we aim to understand the communicative character of the aquarium, considering its mission associated with the conservation of the oceans. Based on these assumptions, we discuss the importance of such studies to the effectiveness of the economic, cultural and scientific investment to the institutions such as museological spaces in general and aquariums specifically.
